The year was 2009. Barack Obama had been sworn in as the 44th President of the United States, Michael Jackson died at age 50, and swine flu was the most terrifying thing people had heard of since the Red Scare.

Oh, and a few guys launched Pinterest, now the fourth highest traffic driving site among Shareaholic’s publishers.

A Major Traffic Source

That’s right tech geeks. Pinterest isn’t just for the swarming crowds of hormone enraged teenage girls and soccer moms. Shareaholic, a provider of social sharing buttons and widgets, released the news in a report that would also reveal Pinterest having usurped Yahoo Search on the traffic driving hierarchy.

Google search was the top traffic source, followed by direct traffic and Facebook.

No doubt SEO companies will start channeling their inner adolescence.

A Little Refresher

Pinterest is “a pinboard-style social photo sharing website that allows users to create and manage theme-based image collections such as events, interests, hobbies, and more. Users can browse other pinboards for inspiration, ‘re-pin’ images to their own collections, or ‘like’ photos.”

According to Pinterest’s website their “goal is to connect everyone in the world through the Pinterest‘things’ they find interesting.”

Shareaholic has over 200,000 publishers using its tools and thus their report is based solely off the websites which are using Shareaholic’s sharing widgets. Regardless of the sample size, however, Pinterest continues rising in the social media world and, if trends continue, looks poised to challenge Facebook one day.
