Twitter continues to increase in popularity as a social media tool as more athletes, movie stars, politicians, business owners and average joes begin to use its services. With such a wide variety of individuals the question arises, what do people tweet about? I have listed below the top 5 trends on twitter for the month of July, so if you want to be hip and cool you should probably listen!

1- Soccer/Football

You might Japan Wins Women's World Cupbe saying soccer, are you sure? Let me tell you, I am! Last month was filled with wonderful soccer events and competitions. The 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup was held, which saw the United States and recently devastated Japan in the final. Tweets of support for both teams were numerous, not to mention love proposals to Alex Morgan and Hope Solo, two of the more attractive USA players. Besides the WWC the South American Copa America also took place, which yielded Uruguay as its champion.

2- Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows, Pt. 2

Now this makes a little more sense. HP7, Pt.2 was one of the most highly anticipated movies in recent times. The last of all the Harry Potter movies brTop 5 Trends on Twitter- Harry Potterought in $92.1 million on opening night, a new record. That was $20 million more than the previous record holder, The Twilight Saga: New Moon, which I think we were all happy to see get crushed. Countless tweets included the names Harry, Ron and of course Hermione as fans publicly displayed their gratitude for the great series.

3- Phineas & Ferb

To be honest I had never even heard of this before. Am I the only one? Apparently a lot of other people have been highly anticipating this new Disney movie that will be hitting the theaters on August 5th. Fans of the old TV show tweeted about their excitement for the up coming film.

4- Norway Explosion/Shootings

The combination of a mass shooting that took place at Norwegian Labour Party’s youth camp on island Utoya, Buskerud, and an explosion in Oslo provided for a very rough month in Norway. The heart of Twitter nation went out to the suffering country with tweets of sympathy and encouragement. The victims of the attacks were honored with a moment of silence as well.

5- Justin Bieber

So what did Justin BiebJustin Bieberer do this past month? He existed. That’s pretty much all the Biebs has to do to make girls wild. As they say, there are two types of people in this world, those who love Justin Bieber and those who pretend not to love Justin Bieber.   Which are you?
