This is a guest blog post provided by Kevin Phelps.
Guest blogging has become a buzzword around the internet marketing industry for good reason; it works. It’s a win-win situation for both the webmaster and the blogger if done correctly but oftentimes webmasters fall short on content because they don’t know how to promote their own site. Here are easy ways to promote and prepare your site.
Promoting Guest Blogging on Your Site
Promotion is actually the easiest part because there are already services out there for you to use. Remember, the main purpose of allowing guest bloggers is to boost your traffic. To boost your traffic you want quality content, so signing up for networks isn’t really the best idea. The first place I’d recommend offering up a place to post for bloggers is GuestBlogPoster.com. These guys work a little bit differently, but they’ll send you content regularly that is fairly impressive and it’s always Copyscape checked.
Sign up for the email list on BloggerLinkUp.com and make sure you get yourself on the list as often as you can. If you only add your site once, it will only be included in one email. Also, make sure you’re very clear with the instructions you’re giving bloggers to prevent getting poorly written copy. Never allow unoriginal content and don’t fear giving those bloggers credit, unless they’re being overly-promotional.
Similar to BloggerLinkUp.com is MyBlogGuest.com that is a larger community of guest bloggers looking for somewhere to contribute. It’s not nearly as easy as BloggerLinkUp.com, but it’s a helpful resource nonetheless.
Once you start publishing guest posts, make sure you are promoting them through Facebook and Twitter, at the very minimum. Bloggers love when webmasters promote their writing and that could cause them to come back and write for you again. Aside from those two benefits, there’s always the social traffic that you’ll be receiving.
Preparing Your Site for Guest Bloggers
If your site looks like the real deal with a good design, guest bloggers are going to love you as long as the content stays up to par. To encourage guest bloggers to post on your site, they need to know the main focus of your site right from the start. Are you a health, travel, financial or family website? Make sure that you’re able to identify that from the homepage.
Second, make sure that you have a page dedicated to accepting guest posts. I would recommend having it somewhere in the navigation and entitling it as “Write for Us” or “Guest Bloggers”. The main reason for these labels is because those page names have become a standard in the industry. Also, when bloggers are on Google prospecting new blogs, they regularly put those words in quotes for Google to find.
On this same page, make sure you are outlining your requirements. Be strict on the important stuff, but never deny a post because of length unless it’s an excellent post. If you’re using WordPress, allow those bloggers to sign up as a Contributor so they can log in, format their post and leave it for you to review and publish. This takes out the busy work of you trying to format, inserting pictures, links and whatever else the blogger is asking for.
Finally, make sure you have a dedicated section for the author bio. Most WordPress themes will include this as part of the theme functions, but if yours doesn’t, look up some author box plugins. I recommend this one.
Keep up the promotion and make sure you are not neglecting the other parts of your site. Make sure the design and pictures within the posts are interesting and engaging. Two of the best examples of quality guest blogging websites that I’ve seen are HiveHealthMedia.com and AllYouNeedisLists.com, make sure to check out how they’re doing it and emulate your strategy to get to their level.
