Search Engine Optimization. Its a relatively new thing and is becoming more and more important to any business that wants to succeed online.
So how do you do it? Flooding your page with your keyword over and over is a good idea right? Not anymore. It used to work back in the day, but SEO is a technique that is constantly evolving, just as the internet is.
By the time you go out and buy SEO for Dummies the rules have changed. So how do you keep up? Here are a few ways to learn SEO and keep on top of a swiftly changing industry.
- Learn from a pro – Ideally you have someone teach you the basics. It is easy to get overwhelmed by all the information on the web, so have someone start you off slow with the basics. Many employees here at Big Leap initially learned from an internship under close supervision from some of the best in the industry. If you don’t have access to this though odds are there is some guru in your neighborhood that has optimized his own site or runs a side job out of his basement.
- Read blogs – Reading blogs is one of the best ways to learn SEO. I highly suggest getting a Google reader account or some other type of RSS reader and subscribing to as many SEO blogs as you can find. SEO Moz, wolf-howl.com, and seo.com are some great places to start. So much of what goes on in SEO is trial and error and experimentation. Subscribing to blogs not only keeps you on top of the latest news, but it lets you see what is working for leaders in the industry.
- Experiment – Nobody knows everything about SEO and odds are you might discover the next best technique. Get your own blog or website and play around with different ideas. Test out the things you’ve learned, but don’t be afraid to think outside the box and test out new ideas.
Optimizing a site is a lot of work. But if you have the time to learn, it is one of the best ways to bring more traffic to your site.
