Search Engine Optimization, SEO, has come a long way since the days of submitting a form to a search engine with a list of your services. Keyword research can tell you how many searches a particular term is getting, and how many sites are using those keywords to attract hits. Often there are other words and phrases to describe your services, and other sites may not be using them. Using those keywords can be a simple way to attract more traffic.
We start by looking at your site, what kinds of words you’re using to describe your products and services, and whether those words are the ones people looking for your services are likely to use. Do you have a short description of your services that a search engine can display to searchers? Does it include the keywords people are searching for?
A content audit looks at questions like, “What kind of content is on your site?” “Is it a site people would find pleasing to look at, someplace they’d want to spend time?” “How is it organized?” “Is it easy to find a description of your services?” “How are you describing your services?” “Is your contact information easy to find?”
What kind of traffic are you getting? How does it compare with what you got last month? These are some of the things an analytics audit can find out, as well as how long people spend on your site, and whether they visit any pages other than the front page. Analytics can also tell you where your visitors are geographically, so whether you’re getting a lot of traffic from Manhattan or Omaha, you might create some content that addresses that area.
Google’s Search Console is a powerful tool and easy to set up. Here are three of the many things it can do.

First, it has tools that can tell you about your site traffic, about how many links to your site display on a results page, and how many clicks you get on those links, that is, the percentage of users who see your page in results then actually click through to your page.

Second, Search Console allows you to run analytics reports.

Third, Search Console can tell you whether there are errors that make it difficult for Google to crawl your site, that is, to read and index it.
A technical audit looks at behind the scenes things like page load speed. Does your page take a long time to load? How can we speed it up? Is it easy for search engines to find their way around. Are there directories or pages you don’t want indexed?
What do you want to know about your competitors? Who are your they? Where are they geographically? Where do they come up on a search engine results page when someone searches for the services you offer? Where do you come up? First page? Tenth? A competitor analysis can answer questions like these, and also see whether they’re offering goods and services you aren’t, or vice-versa.
A link analysis looks not only at what sites you link to, but what sites link to yours. Maybe a site you linked to last year has changed and is redirecting your links to a new URL.You can change your link, speeding up your visitors’ connection time to the new link. Or a site may have been taken down and you can remove the link.

Or maybe you’ve made a change to your site, and people trying to visit from a link on, say, Yelp are getting a “site not found” message. A link analysis can tell you if you’ve got broken links you need to fix or redirect.

A link analysis can also tell you about the quality of your links. Think of links as endorsements: some carry more weight than others, and a search engine may put you higher up in the results page if sites with a lot of traffic link to yours.
