What do you think when someone mentions a blog? Perhaps you think it is a waste of time or not worth the effort. However, blogs can have a lot of benefits for small businesses when they are thoughtful and well-executed.

Businesses who choose not to invest in a blog are missing out on untapped resources. There are people out there in the digital world searching for answers to their questions, and if you aren’t engaged with providing engaging answers and solutions, you can bet someone else will be.

Still not sure if a blog is the right choice for your business? Here are 5 things to consider that might change your mind:

Share your expertise. With a company blog, you can share your knowledge, strategies, and insights to position yourself as an expert in your field. This is also a great way to encourage employee engagement and have them write blog posts too.

Build your following by encouraging people to subscribe to your blog, where they can be notified when a new blog post is published, receive special offers, and other valuable content. If you decide to provide your subscribers with additional information via email, be sure not to inundate them with emails. Not only will people unsubscribe from your emails, but you could lose customers.

Connect with customers. There are so many social platforms out there and everyone is using them to say, look at me! Customers can get bogged down with the constant chatter of various companies bidding for their attention. A company blog though can allow you to better connect with your customers (and potential ones) and build a relationship with them.

Give your company a voice. There are a lot of businesses out there competing with each other and in all the chaos, a company can get lost in the noise. A blog that seeks to provide great content for their customers that is informative and entertaining can help a company stand out against the crowd.

Support your SEO efforts. Things are constantly changing in the world of SEO, but a post with good quality links from well-respected sites can help your SEO rankings (if done right). Unique and valuable content is what search engines are looking for, so the more fresh content you provide on your blog, the higher your ranking will be.

Cost-effective marketing. In the past advertising and marketing could get expensive. Each post you share is an asset, providing you with the opportunities to build brand awareness, share strategies and tips, and promote your services. Promoting your posts via social advertising is an easy and inexpensive way to get your brand in front of more people.

If you aren’t blogging, you’re missing out on connecting with your customers on a deeper level that Twitter and Facebook posts can’t touch.

When creating your blog, remember bad writing and promotional content can turn readers off immediately. Avoid these mistakes and create a blog that converses with your readers, seeks to provide valuable information that your audience wants (not what you want), and has direction — you need to know what your talking about if you want others to follow you.

There is really no reason not to have a blog, and with all the tools and resources out there, you can find a strategy that fits your needs and skills. Don’t have time to manage your own blog? Check out our blog management services.
