YouTube is an awesome tool, when you learn how to use it. Many people hope to hit the jackpot and upload one video that will go “viral” and make them millions of dollars. Although this may be a reality for a select few, it most likely won’t be a reality for the majority of us. That being said, there are two things that may draw more people to your videos: keeping them short and making them entertaining.
Keep it Short
When you get on YouTube, you are most likely looking for a video that will help you escape reality for a few minutes, not for a video that will take 45 minutes to watch. Although there are videos that have done very well being that long, they are usually targeted to a select group and contain a lot of information. If you are looking for more of a general audience, make your videos short so they will be more willing to watch it, yet entertaining so they will stay and watch it.
Make it Entertaining
When the majority of us get on YouTube we do so to find a video that will entertain us.We want
something that will make us laugh, feel good, inspire us, or just take our mind off of our busy schedules. The world we live in teaches us that instant gratification is what we want. If your YouTube video doesn’t offer that to the viewer at the beginning, they are not likely to stay and watch till the end. It is important to offer your viewer something that will catch their attention and entertain them, while getting the message about your product, or topic, across to them.
Although that doesn’t sound too hard, think again. In order to make a short video that will attract a lot of views can be very difficult. You can’t just film something, throw it up on YouTube and expect it to go viral. Again, this may have happened for some of the “viral videos” we see, but we usually don’t have the “in the moment” opportunities that those ones did. There is strategic planning that has to go into your videos: cameras, actors, script, etc.
You don’t have to spend a year working on it, but planning out your videos will greatly impact the traction you get to it. It is important to offer your viewer something that will catch their attention and entertain them, while maintaining your goal of getting the message about your product, or topic, across.
So remember: Keep it short and make it entertaining!
