As I mentioned in a previous post, a citation is a mention of your business name, address, and phone number on another webpage. As we learn from GetListed, “citations are a key component of the ranking algorithms of the major search engines. Other factors being equal, businesses with a greater number of citations will probably rank higher than businesses with fewer citations.”

Getting More High Quality Citations

Now, after submitting your general business information to the top citation sources, how do you get more citations on other high quality sites in order to increase your business’s local rankings?

For starters, you can refer to this definitive list of local citations, focusing on the sites highlighted in red, which are “the most important citations to gather for Google local rankings. . . .”

The third place I highly suggest you go to is Whitespark’s Local Citation Finder. Not only will you be directed to high quality citations using this tool, you will also find local directories that are suited to your type of business, and even your business’s location. The details of how to use this tool effectively are explained by the founder of Whitespark, Darren Shaw, in the 8 1/2-minute video below. With consistent effort, you can get your business on the first page of the SERPs–right up there with the top 7 local listings drawn from Google Maps (aka the “7 Pack”).
