It’s that time again and the voting booths are up.  November 6, 2012, the election is at hand!  Work is being taken off to stand in long lines to send in a vote for the next President of the United States of America.  But is your vote going to person that you want to win?

A viral youtube video, posted early this morning, by a man that discovered a very disturbing glitch.  When trying to click in his vote for President Obama, it was altered to show a vote for Mitt Romney.  Even after deselecting Romney and trying Obama again more carefully and still it would select Romney.

Confused and frustrated he looked into the troubleshoot mode thinking the calibration was off and clicked on the candidate below Obama thinking that it would select him this time.  Nope!  Now it was choosing the other candidate!  It didn’t matter where he pushed on the electronical ballot; there was no way to vote for Obama.

Awhile after the video was posted, that Pennsylvanian machine was taken offline.  NBC was able to confirm that this report was true and the video was legit.  Joseph Lorenzo Hall, who is the Senior Staff Technologist at the Center for Democracy and Technology, said in an interview that “the video above does not showcase fraud, but instead an obviously miscalibrated iVotronic (ES&S) voting machine.”

The only problem with that is, supposedly, there have been other reports through North Carolina and other states with similar glitches.  Also, many bloggers and news teams are finding hacking or manipulating a voter’s machine is so easy “that even a grandma can do it.” Social Media has been playing a huge role in the election and you can find opinions and much more!

So what does that mean to us?  Should we not vote then? WRONG! As an American we are privileged with the right to vote.  Therefore, here are three tips to follow when going to the polls if you have not already.

  1. Make sure the place you go is an official voting booth.  You can look this up on your local government website.
  2. Double check your ballot before submitting it.  You do not want to make any mistakes!
  3. Check around the machine to make sure that there are no extra wires or weird devices that are attached to the voting machine.

If you see anything suspicious then report it immediately!  It is our job as American citizens to create a fair environment and let everyone vote equally. Finally, GET OUT THERE AND VOTE!
