What is Vine?

Twitter released the new video sharing app at the end of January 2013. The application allows you to capture six seconds of constant or stop animation style video through your iPhone or other apple device.  While it is currently only available for the iOS platform, they are working to develop it for other mobile devices.

Video and audio are captured only while you are touching the screen. This enables users to easily pause and restart recordings instantly, editing the video in real-time.  Once you’ve recorded your video the six second loop can be shared on Vine, Facebook, and Twitter.

Who’s On the Bandwagon?

Thousands of users have begun tweeting their six second videos. Celebrities and business moguls are using the app to showcase and promote. Even the news media have begun to take notice.

Musicians and other actors are using the app to post ‘behind the scenes’ style clips that allow their fans an inside look at the lifestyle and industry. Social media savvy journalists are using the app to post ‘first look’ loops about breaking news.  Professional athletics has taken quickly to this new medium with the New York Yankees, the Washington Redskins, the L.A. Lakers, and many other teams sharing their videos on the app.

Six seconds may not seem like much time, but after watching several videos, you’ll be surprised by what you can fit into that short amount of time. With traditional avenues for promotion and advertising, like television commercials, drying up, businesses must start looking for other ways to reach, grown, and retain their clientele. And don’t worry; there are already basic analytic tools available for small businesses that allow you to see the effectiveness of each post.

With Vine the possibilities are endless. Get creative, be spontaneous, and give your customers a reason to keep coming back. Using unique apps, like Vine and Pinterest to help your small business, can give you the competitive edge you need to stay on top!
