MTV hosted their annual Video Music Awards last night and if there is one thing to take away from the night it should be this: Image is Everything. Twitter and other social media outlets have exploded with excitement about *NSYNC’s brief reunion during Justin’s 15 minute musical walk down memory lane as well as criticism and censure for Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke’s questionable on-stage antics.

Whether you’re a musical mega-star, a local artist who wants to break into the industry, or simply a small business hoping to build your passion into something sustainable, there are a couple lessons to be learned from last night.

Good vs. Bad

Miley Cyrus as Hannah Montana

First, big or small, you and your brand have an image. Whether the face of your brand is a pop star or a logo, each brand has a reputation to uphold. The images and behavior of people associated with that brand have a distinct impact on its market value.  Each decision that you make can have a positive or negative impact on your brand.

Let’s say that you want to get some immediate results for your small business. You choose to move away from the ‘good girl’ image of your past and delve into an ‘anything goes’ attitude and begin experimenting with sensational media and black hat SEO.  While these practices may bring you the results you want right now, there may be serious long-term negative side effects. Are the instant results worth the potential damage to your brand?

 Looking Long-Term

NSYNC

*NSYNC’s first album released in April 1998.

When building a brand, it can take years to build a respected reputation for that brand. Unfortunately it only takes seconds to destroy what can sometimes be decades of work. As you concentrate on your small business, keep in mind how your decisions are affecting the public opinion of your brand.

NSYNC Reunion

A good reputation is built with patience, hard work, and learning from your mistakes.  The journey to success includes hundreds of bumps, bruises, and bad press. What matters is that you take those mistakes in stride, learn from them, and work hard to improve upon the good you have already built.  Build a business with this pattern and you will find yourself with a solid ‘fan base’ of customers 15, 30, and 50 years down the road.
